What Leads to Breast Enhancement Surgery - Is it Necessary?

Are the risks worth taking?

You most probably have read or heard stories about things going wrong after a surgery. The truth of the matter is that just like any other medical procedure, the silicone and saline implants that are inserted during a breast enhancement surgery can fail. The usual failure may be either a leak or a break. The insertions are not expected to last forever meaning there is always a high possibility of a repeat job some time in the future.  The other challenges you need to consider include:

  • Mammography: it has been noted the implants could make mammography a little difficult and at times they rupture due to the pressure.
  • Skin wrinkling: when wrinkling occurs in patients with thin skin tissue the implant can push through the skin visibly.
  • Calcification: sometimes calcium deposits form on the scar causing some discomfort and when they occur they need to be identified well to be sure its nothing carcinogenic.

How is it done?

The process of breast enhancement surgery is done through insertion of prosthesis somewhere under or near the breast tissue which is then filled with saline. When this bag expands it gives the breast increased cup size and extra cleavage. The surgeon may make a cut at various locations: below the breast fold, in the areola, the armpit, the periareolar or ant other such place where they will deem best.

A few of the complications that are likely to occur are enlisted here for your consideration as well:

  • Infection: in a few cases infections occur causing fever, swelling and discomfort. In those cases when it won’t respond to treatment the implant needs to be removed surgically.
  • Bleeding: sometimes bleeding can occur into the implant and that would force it to be removed and the wound attended to before the implant is replaced.
  • Capsule contraction: the breast can harden and be painful requiring surgical intervention into the fibrous scar tissue surrounding the implant.
  • Asymmetry: there occasions when one implant slips out of place and the breasts appears unbalanced requiring some surgical intervention to rectify the situation.
  • Deflation: there have been a few cases reported when the implant actually leaked from some weakness or a hole on the saline bag.

It is generally not known how long an implant is going to last inside the body without disruption by the attendant risks we have mentioned. The most likely challenges usually occur when there is an injury to the body such is if you fell or got involved in an automobile accident. And since life affairs are quite unpredictable, it would be important to ask yourself whether you are willing to pay the price of surgically breast enhancement or you would try other less painful alternatives.
